Five Broadway Bound Musicals I’m Looking Forward To « Girl Meets Broadway

While I never fully had an opportunity to participate in drama throughout high school, which is another story altogether, there is a special place in my heart for theatre and musical theatre in particular.  I grew up watching one of my aunts star in several community theatre projects.  In particular I loved her as Dolly Levi Gallagher from Hello, Dolly!.  As a five year-old, I became transfixed and obsessed.  I did not know that my aunt could sing like that!  A little later I had the pleasure of watching her in Grease and Nunsense, among others.  Those childhood afternoons and evenings spent with family watching incredibly small, local theatre productions truly did inspire me and continue to do so.

One of my favorite musicals of all time is Evita.  I love every single thing about it, including the movie version starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas.  In fact, as much as I hate to admit this, there was a time during my high school years that I could practically recite the entire movie.  I love it that much.  It is the only movie I’ve experienced in the movie theater three times.  Again, I became transfixed.  Imagine my surprise when I learned that Evita will be resurrected on Broadway this spring.  My only disappointment is that Patti LuPone will not be starring as Eva.  I’d love to have had the opportunity to see a performance of the original Broadway production of Evita.

After reading the post above, I have to admit that I’d love to see any of the productions included on Girl Meets Broadway’s list.  If there is anything that could lure me to a large metropolis, it would be theatre.  I have yet to be severely disappointed by any theatrical performance large or small.

French Kitchens – The Inside Scoop « Becoming Madame

Yesterday, as I lazily scanned my favorite blogs for brilliance, I came across the beautiful post above by Becoming Madame.  While I don’t like cooking at all, I fell in love with her description and pictures of the traditional French kitchen.  What isn’t there to like?  Wonderful natural light, plenty of aged wood detail, lots of linens, nooks and crannies to explore, fresh herbs, and French doors are only a few of features of the traditional French kitchen I’d love to have in my own home someday.

Well, it’s been a quiet mid-winter weekend here in Michigan.  We’re all still buzzing about the Tigers new acquisition – Prince Fielder.  You would not believe the stunned, and very pleased, reactions among my Facebook friends.  While spring training may be a ways off yet, there appears to be genuine excitement surrounding Prince Fielder.  Personally, I can’t imagine a more meaningful move by Tigers’ management.

It all goes back to those long ago days in the early 90s when Cecil Fielder, Prince’s father and one of my favorite Tigers of all time, reigned supreme.  It is wonderful to see Prince Fielder return to the team he hung out with as a child (see article).  I can’t wait for this baseball season.  It’ll be interesting to see how Prince and Cabrera work together.  Spring can not come fast enough.

As for baseball, I’ve been working on a definitive baseball post for months now.  It is that good.  I now hope to post it the date of the Tigers’ first spring training match-up, March 2, 2012.  I may not reflexively know the standings of the Tigers and White Sox all baseball season long, unlike my boyfriend Brian, but I am interested.  I love the fact that baseball allows you to come to it when you please.  It is just always there in the background… waiting.

It is hard to believe the Challenger disaster took place 26 years ago today.  I may have been only five years-old, but I vividly remember that day.  As the child of a teacher, even at the age of five, it fascinated me that a teacher would be in space, Christa McAuliffe.  I can only imagine what her students went through as they watched the launch, not to mention all of the students watching across the country.  I don’t remember my Mom’s exact reaction when she came home from teaching 4^th grade that day, but I can’t imagine it was good.

It started out innocently enough.  That Tuesday I was at home with my neighbor and babysitter Joyce.  Her older daughter Carla was there with us as well, perhaps home from nursing school.  I distinctly remember watching our old console Zenith only to watch in horror as the tragedy unfolded.  I just remember that something was terribly wrong.  It was not a moment easily forgotten.  Before I could even process what happened as only a five year-old can, I watched as President Reagan gave a moving speech addressing the tragedy.

Christa McAuliffe and all of the astronauts that perished that horrible January morning didn’t die in vain.  Despite the fate of the space program as of late, they will never be forgotten.  As long as there are pioneers and risk-takers in the world, their memory, along with that of the Columbia crew, will live on.

This is one of the funniest posts I’ve come across in a long time.  It had me outright laughing.  I even toyed with doing my own “exclusive” interview with my four year-old self.  Sometimes I wonder where Angie Z. comes up with these ideas.  I love them!

What would I say to my four year-old self?  I’m not exactly sure; I just know that I’d tell her to appreciate nap time.  Someday she will appreciate it.  I’d also tell her to be nicer to her Mom.  Mom doesn’t want to come home to a four year-old telling her to go back to school.

Side note:  I actually did say that to my Mom.  She is a teacher and I didn’t want the babysitter to leave.

I have to agree with this list.  Several people commenting on the article suggested that the Connors from Roseanne should be included as well.  I won’t argue there.  It is funny to think that this could’ve been re-titled Our Favorite TV Families Of The 1980s.

Where do I even start?  I don’t think another TV show ever meant as much to me as The Wonder Years.  As I grew up watching the show as a child, I wanted to be Winnie Cooper.  I loved her look.  I wanted to have the same long brown hair and dark brown eyes.  She even looked great when she pouted, which occurred just about any time she talked to Kevin.  Something intangible about the show, and Winnie Cooper, stuck with me through the years.

That isn’t even to mention the star of the show, Kevin Arnold.  How could any girl resist all of the attention and love he gave Winnie?  I don’t think any adolescent girl has ever been as greatly admired and loved as Winnie Cooper.  None of it seemed to matter to her.  Of course, that is exactly what frustrated me with the show; it is also what made the show great.  The audience never knew week to week whether or not Kevin and Winnie would be together.   In the end, it wasn’t to be.  Winnie went off to study art history in Paris and Kevin went on to start a family of his own, without her.  Here is a link to a  wonderful Top 10 of Winnie and Kevin together.
