My Life In Pop Culture

Here you will find my life in pop culture.  Each page discusses a song, a TV show, film, or book that had a significant impact on my life.  I’m doing this for myself more than anything.  I am sharing in the hope someone out there can relate.  I’d also love to hear what books, music, TV shows, and films resonated with you.

I originally planned to include only music on this page.  Music once played a vital role in my life, even though I have no musical talent whatsoever.  I then realized I’d be leaving out over half of the story.  As a child, I adored TV and spent too much time watching it.  There is a reason why my parents nicknamed me the TV guide.  Fortunately I am a child of the 80s and 90s.  We had Cheers, The Cosby Show, The Simpsons, and M*A*S*H, not to mention actual videos on MTV and cartoons limited to Saturday mornings (Smurfs anyone?).  I also loved the movie theater.  I’m old enough to remember watching Home Alone and Jurassic Park, the originals, in the theater, along with 10 Things I Hate About You, Cold Mountain, and Alive.

While TV and film enjoyed varying degrees of importance in my life throughout the years, now greatly diminished, books will always enjoy a special place in my heart.  In a sense this entire blog is a result of my love affair with books.  Some of my favorite childhood authors include:  Laura Ingalls Wilder, Judy Blume, Shel Silverstein, Roald Dahl, and the great nom de plume Carolyn Keene.  As an adult, I discovered wonderful writers such as:  Larry McMurtry, Stephen King, Barbara Kingsolver, Suzanne Collins, Esmeralda Santiago, Dan Brown, Francine Prose, Maya Angelou, Malcolm Gladwell, Gregory Maguire, among countless others.

So why exactly am I doing this?  Unfortunately, as an American citizen, pop culture helped shape me as person for better or worse.  Fortunately I’m only going to provide the highlights here.  I tend to seek out the positive in pop culture or at least items that have some redeeming value.  You will find no reality TV here.  Enjoy!

Below is the blog post that inspired it all:
